It would definitely be impossible to spend time in the Portimão region without stepping on to the sands, but it is also worth trying to discover some of the area’s hidden charms with the Atlantic Ocean serving as a distant backdrop. Take a break from the beach, pack a rucksack, take deep breaths of pure, fresh air and head off along one of Portimão’s five nature trails. Discover the scenic beauty of sites like Ponta João D’Arens, where the rocks, sculpted by erosion, provide shelter for various species of birds; or the fabulous Alvor Estuary where the dunes have made the existence of marshes and the estuary itself possible. Many species of plants and animals depend on them, as do the local fishermen and shellfish-gatherers.
Be sure to stop off in Mexilhoeira Grande, where the landscape consists largely of farmland, and discover the history of our ancestors dating back to prehistoric times.
